The game is played with a single deck of cards. Each player will receive two cards which are dealt face down. These are the players ‘hole cards’. In the centre of the table three cards are dealt face up (the flop), then two additional single cards (the turn), these cards can be used by all players and are called ‘community cards’.
The player can then use the two cards in their hand together with any three out of the five community cards to make the best five card hand possible. During a round of betting a player can perform one of the following actions:
- Check : a bet of zero
- Call : a bet matching the previous bet
- Raise : a bet higher than the previous bet
- Fold : Withdraw from the betting and losing any money staked already
